Port Street Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)

The Heritage Lottery Fund and Wychavon District Council has allocated funds to continue the conservation led regeneration of the Port Street and Waterside area of Evesham.  The project will see the repair and restoration of a further 20 or so historic properties in this part of the town which was badly affected by the floods in July 2007.  The project has been developed in partnership with the Local Strategic Partnership and property owners and tenants.

The first grants have been allocated with the largest so far of £80,000 going to the Regal Cinema in Port Street.  The Regal Cinema project was launched in October 2010 with a press release from the owners:

Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS)

Our  previous regeneration scheme for the regeneration of Port Street and Waterside (HERS) finished in 2008.  This successful scheme was jointly funded with Advantage West Midlands and English Heritage.

Port Street Evesham

The floods of 2007 were a set back just as the last few projects were being completed, use of traditional methods and materials for the work proved to be justified as HERS works survived in good condition.

HERS supported:

  • 19 projects totalling more than £500,000 a least half of which has been private funding
  • Restoration and replacement of a number of decayed shop fronts (empty shop premises were also brought back into use)
  • Roof repairs and render repairs to make buildings weather proof for the future
  • Restoration of empty flats over shops to provide new homes

The Heritage Team

  • co-ordinates ongoing works in Port Street and Waterside
  • ensures that high standards of traditional workmanship are maintained
  • encourages the continued use of our local heritage as a springboard for economic regeneration
