Air Quality
We have a legal duty to review and assess the air quality of the
area against the National Air Quality Objectives in respect of
Benzene, 1-3 Butadiene, Carbon Monoxide, Lead, Nitrogen Dioxide,
Particulates (PM10), Sulphur Dioxide. These
national, health-based objectives are designed to reduce pollution
from industrial sources and traffic and improve quality of life for
us all.
Air Quality Management Area Evesham
We have carried out a review and assessment of air quality in
Evesham and we are satisfied that the air quality objective in
respect of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) annual mean specified in the
Air Quality (England) Regulations 2000 is unlikely to be achieved
in the section of Port Street Evesham between the Waterside/Port
Street Traffic lights and the Shore Street Junction.
This means that we expect NO2 levels in this area to be greater
than the targets we are required to aim for.
As we have identified what is known as an exceedence, we must
set up an air quality management area (AQMA).
We are carrying out a further assessment to confirm the original
findings and the boundaries of the AQMA. We will then develop an
Action Plan, aiming to reduce the concentration of NO2 in the AQMA
to below the target level.

Air Quality Management Area - Port Street, Evesham
An Air Quality Management Area was declared in 2007 for
Port Street in Evesham on the basis of a likely exceedence of
the National Air Quality Objective for nitrogen dioxide. The
exceedence was attributed to the traffic levels and congestion in
that area as there are no significant contributions from industrial
or other sources in the area.
An action plan has been developed with the
objective to improve air quality in this area, it centres on
emissions from road vehicles. In accordance with the legislation we
have consulted with relevant stakeholders including Evesham Town
Council and Worcestershire County Council.
