Health and Safety

Our Health and Safety officers are responsible for enforcing health and safety law in the following workplaces – offices, shops and warehouses, retail, food, leisure and childcare premises, residential accommodation and consumer services e.g. hairdressers. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforces other workplaces such as manufacturing premises, industrial processes, railways, airports, agriculture, construction and local authority activities. Find your local HSE office here.

We inspect businesses from time to time to ensure that health and safety law is being complied with. We also investigate complaints (from employees or members of the public) and serious accidents, and where necessary take action to improve procedures or facilities or remove unsafe conditions.

Complaints from employees can, where necessary, be investigated without revealing the source but we would always advise employees to raise concerns directly with their employers if possible.

We encourage improvements in health and safety by advising employers, but occasionally formal action such as serving notices or prosecution may be necessary.
