Community minded projects throughout Wychavon
have been awarded nearly £65,000. The annual community grants have
recently been announced with over eighteen projects receiving
funding throughout the district.
Tracy Grubb, Community Development
Officer at Wychavon said “We had over 30 projects apply
for funding this year, so it was again a popular scheme. Money has
been awarded to the best of those projects and we look forward to
seeing the benefits that our support brings to these worthy
causes.”
The three biggest awards of £10,000 went to
Evesham Sports Club, Pershore Riverside Youth Centre and the
Droitwich Norbury Theatre.
Bob Bailey, Chairman of Evesham Sports
Club said “We are overjoyed at the Community Grant which
will go towards flood proof sewerage pumping station project at the
Club. This will enable the long term development and growth
of our Junior Rugby and Cricket Sections to continue in the future
and will ensure the Club’s previously outdated infrastructure does
not prove a barrier to this growth. We are most grateful to
Wychavon District Council for this support and to Severn Waste
Services for their incredibly generous support for this
project.”
Alex Mellor, Centre Manager of
Pershore Riverside said “It is fantastic news, and greatly
appreciated, to be awarded the grant. Participation at the
Riverside Centre is growing and offering more activities like
archery, and canoeing on the river is important. Because of this
increase in demand from young people, we need more space and are
planning to build an extension, and add facilities, enabling
more of these healthy outdoor style activities. As a charity run
youth facility, in the voluntary sector, the long term support from
Wychavon is greatly appreciated and has helped make this and our
other projects possible.”
Anne Lane, Chairman of the Norbury
Theatre, Droitwich said “I am really excited for the
future of the Theatre. We have all been working hard towards making
the Theatre a vital part of Droitwich Spa, and the refurbishment of
the auditorium is a great step along the way.”
But some of the smaller awards are just as
gratefully received as we saw when they came to collect their
cheques today (Monday, 9 August).
Margaret Hargreaves, Pershore East
District Administrator for the Brownies, said: "The 1st
Peopleton Brownies are really grateful for this grant. They
lost all their equipment back in the 2007 floods, so the money
will be put to good use to buy all the things the Brownies need for
their games and activities."
Margaret Whitefield, President of the
Evesham Stroke Support Group, said: "This grant award is
great news for our group. It means we can now hire a vehicle
that will allow us to take disabled and housebound people
out on an excursion for the day."
Gareth Harries, of the Pershore &
District U3A Group, which helps retired people stay fit and active,
said: "We'd like to thank Wychavon for this
grant. We'll use the award to help fund things for the group,
such as sheet music for the choir, books for the poetry
appreciation group and DVDs for learning Italian."
