The annual Salt Day organised by Droitwich Spa
Area Partnership and Wychavon District Council, in conjunction with
other local organisations, will take on the streets of Droitwich
Spa on Saturday 11 September.
The event is set to be another exciting day of
fun celebrating the town’s salt heritage which dates back to the
Iron Age. Now in its fifth year the celebration, plays host to
entertainment, salt heritage events and even a visit by the
Romans.
The day opens at 9am with a farmers and craft
market selling fresh local produce and crafts, giving shoppers
chance to seek out that special gift or spoil themselves with the
delicious food on offer. The Droitwich Lions book sale will
also start at 9am in St. Andrew’s Church.
Councillor Lynne Duffy, Mayoress of Droitwich
Spa and Councillor Linda Robinson, Chairman of Wychavon District
Council, will open the main event at 11am in Victoria Square.
They will be joined by Roland Revil, Mayor of Voiron, which has
recently twinned with Droitwich Spa. The ceremony will be
followed by a march by the Air Cadets Band.
“Salt Day is a major event for the town and
not only celebrates the town’s history but also shows what
Droitwich Spa has to offer. “commented Janet Yates,
Droitwich Spa Area Partnership Manager for Wychavon “It
has become a major event for the town and offers an ideal day out
for the whole family.”
Visitors will have plenty of chance to learn
about the town’s salt history. They can meet the Romans at
their camp in Vines Park and find out about how they. There
are salt making demonstrations in Gurneys Lane along with
opportunity to build a model of medieval Droitwich and the salt
buildings which shaped the town. There are displays of
photographs both on the Droitwich Spa Civic and Historic Societies
stand in the High Street and the Heritage Centre. Younger
visitors will can write their own salty poem, make a Roman
headdress or even dance around a salt cellar.
Victoria Square will host a 1940’s VE Day
Party with displays, vehicles, period music and re-enactors.
Salt Day also celebrates Droitwich Spa’s
present with music, entertainment, displays, canoeing, sports
activities and canal boat trips. Many local voluntary groups
will have stalls at the event promoting what they do and raising
funds. There are also plenty of organisations on hand to
offer advice about healthy living, energy awareness and services
available to the local community. At Waitrose Food Tent,
visitors can sample local foods sold by the store.
The town’s German and French Twinning
Associations will have displays about the Spa’s twin towns of Bad
Ems and Voiron as well as food and drink to sample or buy.
Children and young people will be well catered
for with art workshops, stilt-walkers, puppet shows, Museum on the
Move, a farm animal corner and owl display. They can also visit a
fire engine and learn how to escape from a smoke house. Spa
Youth Zone will be hosting a fun day with music, dance and art
activities and in Vines Park, local young people will showcase
their talents.
A new attraction is the scarecrow competition
which gives children (and grown ups) the opportunity to bring along
a homemade scarecrow or test out their crafty skills by making one
on the day, with the best winning a prize.
