Wychavon recently hosted its annual Schools’ Poster Competition with presentation evening.

The annual competition is to help children to encourage others to reduce waste sent to landfill. The competition is run in partnership with local organisations to promote these messages and is a great way to get young people to think about important issues.

Councillor Anna Mackison presented fifteen children with their awards - a framed copy of their winning poster, vouchers and a goodie bag. Thanks to the generosity of JuteXpo, the three first prize winners’ schools were also presented with 100 jute bags each, with the winning posters printed on, which could be used to raise funds for their schools.

Denise Ditchburn, Recycling Officer at Wychavon said: “The clear, thought provoking messages and creativity shown in this year’s entries were high as ever.  Young people want to encourage us to home compost, to re-use bags and to recycle more, but also deal with the more complex issues of how our waste can affect wildlife and their habitats. It is all very inspiring!”

The posters will be displayed around the district, starting in the Evesham, Droitwich and Pershore Community Contact Centres.  Afterwards, they will be displayed in the towns’ libraries.  Residents are encouraged to pop in and think more about what can be done to deal with waste.

Wychavon would like to thank all the sponsors of this event, whose support helped to ensure that each school participating in the competition received a voucher for £60 to use at Worcestershire Resource Exchange.  Worcestershire Resource Exchange, which is based at the Shrub Hill Industrial Estate in Worcester, is a great community project for art & re-use and is ideal for schools, but also open to the public.

The sponsors of the event were: Jutexpo Limited, Worcestershire County Council, Seven Waste Services, Focsa Services (U.K.) Ltd, Worcestershire Resource Exchange, P D Hughes ltd, Mitie Cleaning & Support Services, Glasdon Group Limited, Sommerfield /Co-Operative Group, Waitrose ltd, Boots The Chemist.
