Christmas trees given a new lease of
life
Each year approximately eight million Christmas trees are bought
in the UK and of that number as many as six million, enough to
stretch end to end from London to the North Pole and back, are
incinerated or dumped.
This year Wychavon had a fantastic response to their Christmas
tree recycling scheme with nearly 16 tonnes of Christmas trees
composted.
Denise Ditchburn, Promotions & Monitoring Assistant
at Wychavon said “Thanks to all residents who took the
time to recycle their Christmas trees this year we’ve had a
fantastic response!”
Residents took their real Christmas trees to one of 8 centres
throughout the district, where they were shredded into large skips
and taken to the composting facility at Hill and Moore near
Pershore. The end result is good quality compost. This can be
purchased in 40lt bags for £2.00 from any of Worcestershire’s
household waste sites.
Larger volumes of compost can be bought direct from the Hill and
Moor household waste site at Throckmorton, Pershore, Monday
-Saturday 8am-6pm, Sunday 9am-1.30pm and depending on
suitability of trailer or vehicle you can have the compost loaded
loose for £2.50+VAT per tonne or you can fill your own bags for £1
a bag.
Denise continued “But it doesn’t just stop with
Christmas, if you have extra garden waste why not think about home
composting. It’s really simple and very satisfying knowing your
plants are benefiting from your compost, by putting nutrients back
into the soil and it’s extremely environmentally friendly as there
is no transport needed. Great as we look forward to getting out
into our gardens ready for spring.”

Remember there are Green Waste Skips available all year
round at the Household Waste Sites, so garden waste can be
composted there as well.
