A knockout success

The founding member of Droitwich Spa Amateur Boxing Club has been awarded the Wychavon Bursary for his work in the community.

Chris Andrews, who has over 30 years of service and has coached many hundreds of local youngsters in the sport, was presented with the award by Chairman of the Council, Tony Miller, at an official civic reception on Monday 6 February.

As in previous years, there were many upstanding members of the community and great examples of community spirit. But ultimately it was Mr Andrew’s devotion and inspiration to the members of the club that landed him a unanimous points decision.

In his work, particularly with young people, Mr Andrews places great emphasis in teaching the skills of boxing. The training builds self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping youngsters adapt to a disciplined environment. These are critical aspects and aid the personal and social development of the young people taking part.

Councillor Tony Miller, Chairman of Wychavon District Council, said: “It is a very proud and humbling experience when we see the amount of time and dedication given by the people who volunteer in Wychavon. We cannot honour everyone, but Chris has dedicated much of his life to improving the fitness and behaviour of our young people. Droitwich Spa Amateur Boxing Club is a splendid example of how people can make magnificent and positive difference to their community. I am very proud to have presented Chris with this award.”

Chris Andrews, the Wychavon Bursary award winner, said: “It’s a very big honour to have received this award; it’s the whole team who make what we do possible. We are currently trying to find new premises for the boxing club, so the money will be put towards that - every penny counts.”

The Wychavon Bursary, awarded by Wychavon District Council, is presented every year to an individual or group that has made a real difference to their community. The winner receives a certificate and a £200 cheque to help them continue their good work.
