Centre named to honour Councillor

On 14 February 2012, Wychavon will honour VJ Smith a Councillor dubbed ‘Mr Pershore’, for his dedication and long service to the town. Wychavon will do this by naming one of their new rooms in his memory. The room will provide a day centre to Heathlands residents and will be a fitting tribute to his memory.

Cllr. Paul Middlebrough, Leader of Wychavon said “Cllr. Smith was a devoted local member, friend to so many people and was known and admired throughout Worcestershire, Herefordshire and of course Pershore. We’re pleased to be able to dedicate our new room to his memory for generations to come. “

John died in January 2009 but left a long legacy having served on Pershore Town Council since May 1947, he was a Worcestershire county councillor since May 1973 until his death and a Wychavon district councillor in May 1974 until May 2003 and serving on virtually every committee there was locally. He was the first Honorary Alderman for Wychavon, an honour he was bestowed with in December 2004. He was particularly interested in youth issues and did a lot of work with local schools and fundraising for local charities.

Cllr. Smith’s family were overjoyed at the news of the centre being named in his memory:

Comment from the family “John would have been very pleased to give his full and backing to the day centre and the family would like to thank everyone involved.”
