12 Moves - Flashmobs Group

Did 12 Moves is come to a street near you?

On 23rd July at around 1pm shoppers in Droitwich Spa were given a surprise when 75 dancers began an unexpected performance. The flashmob dancers performed their rehearsed moves in Victoria Square and Vines Park.

The performers worked together for several weeks to create and rehearse the specially-developed dance. Ranging in age from 11 to 60 and drawn from towns and villages across Worcestershire, the group’s work was led by professional choreographer Jennifer Irons and composer Mira Calix.

The performances are part of 12 Moves, the largest dance project to have ever taken place in Worcestershire. Over three years, thousands of people are being given the opportunity to participate and experience dance and digital art in unusual settings.

12 Moves culminates in an outdoor spectacular event in Worcester on March 24 2012.

Charlotte Brennan, 12 Moves project manager, said: “The dancers have worked incredibly hard to create these performances and it’s fantastic to see their creativity develop.”

What is 12 moves?

'12 Moves’ is a 2 year project across Worcestershire inspired by the People Dancing programme, part of the West Midlands’ Culture Programme for London 2012 funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England West Midlands and Advantage West Midlands. The first part of the project with two Dance Squads delivering sessions to young people and adults began in July 2010. ‘12 Moves’ will continue to grow and include performances, film and flashmobs culminating in a largescale final event in March 2012.

The aim of the project is to give people in Worcestershire the opportunity to take part in dance – for health, for fun, to create and to see dance in surprising places using film and live dance. The Dance Squads aim is to demonstrate how dance can be one way of getting fit and be part of a healthy lifestyle.  There are different types of session to choose from that include streetdance, Zumba, Chance to Dance (for people aged 55+), creative.

Wychavon District Council is inviting residents to come dancing once again this autumn.
After an array of dance classes in the summer holidays, new dance classes continue to happen this autumn and winter in and around Evesham. Many of them are free for young people if they’re between 11-18 years of age.
Led by the counties dance development agency, Dancefest, the dancing project known as ’12 Moves’, will offer classes in street and contemporary dance.

With the support of funding through the Health Improvement Fund, Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council, ’12 Moves’ aims to get young people taking part in positive activities and also improve the fitness of more senior residents in Wychavon. They are still looking for older people’s groups to get involved with the project from January 2011 so if you know of any that wants to do dance then get in touch.

In 2011, there will be more classes and opportunities to perform, such as ‘Flashmobs’ – this is where dancers suddenly begin performing out in the open amongst a surprised and unsuspecting general public.  See http://www.flashmob.co.uk/

Then in the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Worcestershire will stage a site specific video installation performance that will use local dancers and live performance to bring people out onto the streets and see dance on plasma TVs, shop windows, buildings and architectural structures.
