Rural Play Initiatives Grant - Case Studies
In 2010 we launched the Rural Play Initiatives Grants. Below are
a few case studies from completed projects
Sheppey Play Project (awarded £10,000 towards a £80,000+
project)
The Sheppey Play Project began after old play
equipment was condemned by a safety officer. The children in the
two villages complained to their parents and an action group was
formed when they discovered that there were no plans to replace the
equipment. With the financial support of Wychavon District
Council's Rural Play Grant, Public Health and Worcestershire County
Council they have been able to start the first stage of their
project and install some new equipment including a kick wall, pod
swing, see saw and more.
PROJECT OUTCOME
- Children are excited with the equipment and
also use it as a place to meet their friends
COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION TO THE
PROJECT
- Hard work and time went in to fund raising with a murder
mystery evening, cream teas and children carol singing, all helping
to bring in funds and raise the profile of the project.
- Major support from Cropthorne Parish Council and Cropthorne and
Charlton Village Hall

Ashton Under Hill Social Centre (awarded £2500 towards a
£11,000 project) - 2010

Hanbury Play Area (awarded £25,000 towards a £83,714 project) -
phase 1 completed 2011

Friends of Pool Garden (awarded £10,000 towards a £35,000
project) - 2011
The Friends of Pool Garden was established to
raise funds for a new playground in Fladbury, as it was established
in the Village Plan that the site was little used by the village
children. The equipment was old and lacked excitement for the
children. Surveys were conducted to determine what the village
wanted from the site and fundraising began in earnest, which
included table top sales, a Hallow’een party and a Christmas disco,
a cheese & wine tasting evening, a 5k sponsored run and many
cake sales.
Grants were also applied for to help with the
£35,000 needed to complete the playground.
The playground was awarded a £10,000 Rural
Play Initiative Grant from Wychavon District Council. This money
helped towards the cost of purchasing and installing new equipment,
principally a wooden play tower/ship, complete with slide and
climbing net. The money also helped with the cost of resurfacing
the play area, which is now beautifully landscaped, with grassy
mounds, and with the purchase of a circular table to seat eight,
with plenty of room for wheelchairs and or/pushchairs.
The playground, officially opening on
September 11th has been well received by the community
and offers a more exciting and challenging place for the children
to play.
The Group have also received grants from Awards For All and Severn
Waste Management and raised close to £10,000 through various
fundraising events.
