Olympic Torch routes through Wychavon

Droitwich to Worcester Map Route and Evesham Map Route

Bus timetable changes across Worcestershire due to the Olympic Torch Relay

Wychavon has been chosen as a host location and we hope you will celebrate with us on 24th May 2012 (Day 6), when the Torch will travel down from Kidderminster through Droitwich and Fernhill Heath and then on to Worcester and then on  1st July 2012 (Day 44), when the Torch will travel down from Birmingham through Evesham, Wickhamford and Broadway.

On Thursday 24th May (Droitwich & Fernhill Heath) and Sunday 1st July (Evesham, Wickhamford & Broadway) as the torch passes through we are hoping to see a great celebration of this historic event. Residents have been encouraged to line the left hand side of the streets and community groups have been encouraged to come up with ideas of how they would like to do something to join in the celebration.

Everyone is encouraged to line the streets (on the left hand side of the road) for this wonderful historic event. Below is a list of safety guidelines to keep yourselves and your families safe

  • There will be no parking on the torch relay route, so if you decide to drive to watch it please ensure you park in a place that won’t get in the way of the relay.
  • Don’t run out in front of or alongside the torch as there will be moving vehicles. Stand some where safe along the route to watch it.
  • View from the pavement of the passenger side door of the convoy for the best view and to have a better chance of getting freebies being given out from sponsor vehicles.
  • If you’re not attending the party in the square at Droitwich, watch the relay from as close to work or home as possible as there may be traffic delays.
  • Local radio will be broadcasting information or follow the progress on twitter #torchrelayworcs
  • Safety for you and your family remains your responsibility. So make sure someone is watching children at all times.

Community Games

Community Games is a regional programme funded by Legacy Trust UK aimed at inspiring local communities to stage their own community event. The vision is to create a legacy for 2012 by encouraging street level celebrations of sporting and cultural events, run by communities for communities. A community can be any group of people who spend time together, including streets, workplaces, regular users of a park, clubs and many more.

Games should include both sporting and cultural events and some sort of ceremony, opening and/or closing, however they will all look different depending on the wishes of the community that are organising it.

Take a look at the Community Games page and see what has taken place so far this year

The event does not have to be a new event - as long as it incorporates the key features it can be called a Community Games

A toolkit has been created which give information on how to get started, getting other people involved, and running an event. To download the toolkit visit www.wmfor2012.com/community-games . There is also a dedicated community games website for you to visit at http://www.communitygames.org.uk/.

If you have an idea, or already run a community event that with a little bit of help could be a community games then please contact Emma Gardner, Community Health Officer for Wychavon District Council to find out what support you can receive. Tel: 01386 565182 Email: emma.gardner@wychavon.gov.uk

Inspired Toolkit

Organisations or groups who are seeking to increase physical activity levels or sports participation are being urged to get inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by using a brand new physical activity toolkit – called 'Inspired?'

The 'Inspired?' guide to running Olympic/Paralympic-themed events and sports programmes has been produced by the Worcestershire Partnership. Any organisation that organises physical activities can get involved by checking out the toolkit online or requesting a printed version.

Peter Turvey, Worcestershire Olympics Coordinator 21012 Games for the Worcestershire Partnership, said: "This toolkit will help to create a countywide '2012 festival', inspiring local people from all backgrounds and locations to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games through mass participation in sport and physical activity.

"The toolkit seeks to engage a broad spectrum of organisations contributing to the sporting, recreation and physical activity agendas to ensure the Olympic and Paralympic message is coordinated across Worcestershire. A special focus is placed on using the inspiration of this once in a lifetime opportunity to engage with people who aren't undertaking recommended levels of physical activity, helping to change attitudes and motivate people towards a more active lifestyle.

"The Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence, along with the Paralympic values of determination, courage, inspiration and equality, underpin the toolkit, so it's not just limited to sport but encompasses the broader cultural opportunities. People of all ages can be inspired to make the most of their own abilities and be the best that they can be in whatever direction they're inspired by."

Any clubs, societies or organisations that are inspired to get involved with the 2012 Olympic Games can visit www.raisingourgame2012.org.uk (live from Sept 2010)

Alternatively, copies of the toolkit can be requested from Peter Turvey at pturvey@worcestershire.gov.uk
