Community Games

What are Community Games?

Community Games is a West Midlands Olympic Legacy project which provides a great opportunity to bring communities together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
All Community Games will look different, some being competitive, others focussing on increasing participation. Whatever the focus of the Community Games, it should provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to participate.
Even existing events can be turned into a Community Games as long there are sporting and cultural elements and some sort of ceremony.
Above all, the Community Games programme aims to capture the core values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements. You can find more information at http://www.communitygames.org.uk/

If you have a Community Games coming up and want to put some information on our website, please send details to Mark Williams at mark.williams@wychavon.gov.uk or phone 01386 565229

Wychavon Party in the Park 2011- 23rd - 25th August 2011

Party in Park 2011 logo

The 2011 Wychavon Party in the Park events were another great success. This year we decided to make it a celebration of what is available in your community. Many local clubs and organisations took part in the event, either to showcase what they do, give out information or be on hand to answer any questions. Local sports clubs came along and gave taster sessions for children giving them the opportunity to try the sport and see if it is something they may like to do. We also had live music with performances from the children involved in the Youth Music Project and W Factor, we had face painting, circus skills, henna and a climbing wall (Evesham & Pershore) which were all local, even the weather was amainly on our side! It was a great three days and very well received by all and Wychavon District Council Community Development Team would like to thank everyone who supported the event.

For pictures of the event go to Summer Events Page

If you are a local voluntary or community group that would like to be part of next years event then please contact Tracy Grubb on 01386 565168 or email tracy.grubb@wychavon.gov.uk

Mini Olympics

On Tuesday July 5th Blossom Vale Children's Centre hosted a mini Olympic themed event for families with children under five years old. The fun began at 9.30 am until 11.30 am and took place on Abbey park Middle School field.
There was an opening and closing ceremony for all attendees to take part in as well as the opportunity to win medals.
Parents were encouraged to have fun and join in traditional sporting activities with their children, including, mini hurdles, foam javelin throwing, jumping and much more.
There was support from a variety of people within the community – Abbey Park Middle School  offered us the venue, Pershore High school students offered to support with the organisation on the day and funding for resources etc was received from 'Inspired small grant scheme Worcestershire'. All of which enabled us to host this exciting opportunity to promote good health through physical activities.
"We are all aware of the importance of regular exercise especially when we are trying to reduce obesity levels in children. By introducing your child at a young age to fun physical exercise it is a great way of encouraging them to become more involved with physical activity at a later stage in their development. Physical activity can be fun and is a major part of a healthy lifestyle," commented Lorraine Warren (Manager of Blossom Vale Children's Centre)

Harvington Gras Games - Sunday 8th May 2011

THE VILLAGE of Harvington went green crazy by holding its first ever asparagus festival from May 6th – 8th May.

On Sunday the Gras Games were held on the playing field. Gus and the Asparagus Fairy graced the event with their presence. The weather was sunny and breezy, which aided the asparagus spears in their flight. The relay and obstacle races were very popular, and the tug of war teams were coached by trained coaches before going to battle. The tug of war proved popular not just with the men, but also with the ladies’ and children’s teams which entered. After the prize giving, many people could be seen wearing their hard won medals with pride. The stalls around the field gave both contestants and spectators chance to refresh themselves with Pimms, beer, tea, ice cream, cake, pork baps and many other tasty treats. Other stalls gave those attending chance to stock up their gardens, buy balloons, have their face painted or cheer on the competitors in the woodlouse race. During the weekend Harvington showed that it knows how to enjoy itself and that it is an active and social community, the organisers and sponsors worked hard and can be rightly proud of their efforts.

Harvington Community Games

Organiser Liz Wootton was delighted with how it all went. She said: “It was a fabulous few days, a really lovely event and it was great to see the whole village come together.
Because it’s been a big success we are now planning to hold the event again next year and if possible make it an annual event"
