Equality Framework for Local Government
In 2010, we were confirmed as an
“achieving” council under the Equality
Framework for Local Government. There are three levels under
the framework: developing, acheiving and excellent.
In January 2010, an independent team of
assessors made up of officers and councillors from Barnsley
Metropolitan Borough Council, Bassetlaw District Council and
Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council carried out a diversity peer
challenge to assess our status under the
then new Equality Framework for Local
Government.
We prepared a self-assessment for the team and a
series of case studies demonstrating how we make a difference to
residents through many of our services and activities.
The team spent two days talking to over sixty
people about our work on equalities, before awarding us ‘achieving’
status. The good work recognised by the peers included our
understanding of the community and use of information, the Youth
Zone and Youth Bus, work with migrant workers and the positive
attitude of our staff. The team felt we are well on the
way to achieving ‘excellent’ status.
Councillor Mike Quigley (MBE), Diversity Peer
Challenge Team Leader said, “Wychavon has a good knowledge of the
whole community, vulnerable groups and strong self-awareness as an
organisation. Wychavon is one of the few councils to have all
buildings fully accessible to those with disabilities”.
