Data Protection

Wychavon District Council is a Data Controller under the Data Protection Act 1998

The Council collects and keeps information about the people who use its services, its employees and others with whom it deals and communicates.

This personal information is held for the purposes of fulfilling the Council’s duties as a public authority and employer.

The Data Protection Act 1998 places obligations on Data Controllers, which require them to ensure that personal details are collected, kept and used in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

All personal information will be treated as confidential and kept secure by the individual Service Sections of the Council.  It shall be accurate and kept up to date and only used for the purpose for which it is supplied. Personal data will not be kept longer than is necessary

In certain circumstances (which will always be notified to individuals at the time of providing the information), the Council may check information furnished to it, in order to check its accuracy, prevent or detect crime or to protect public funds in other ways, as the law permits.  No personal information will be disclosed to anyone unless the law permits it to do so.

The Council has in place a Procedure to accommodate the Subject Access Rights conferred by the Act.

The Council’s Data Protection Officer, the Head of Legal and Support Services, is the individual responsible for the operation of the Act within the Council and he can be contacted at the Council with any queries relating to the Data Protection Act. Any Complaints by individuals under the Data Protection Act should also be addressed to the Data Protection Officer, in the first instance.

The Data Protection Officer is also responsible for Notifying the purposes for which the Council processes personal data to the Information Commissioner and for keeping the Council’s Notifications up to date.
