Affordable Housing
Affordable Housing
- Affordable Housing is subsidised housing
which is made available to people who cannot afford to rent or buy
a property on the open market appropriate for their
needs.
- It can be provided by an organisation such as
a Registered Provider, to meet various levels of housing
need. It is offered in a range of property types to meet
identified needs of various household types and sizes.
- It can be available for rent or to buy. There are a number of
different models to buy a home including HomeBuy
Shared Ownership.
- The Council's Housing and Planning Departments work together to
assess the housing needs within the District and ensure we have the
right strategies and policies in place to meet these needs where
possible. We achieve this by working in partnership with
Registered Providers, Developers, the Rural Housing Enabler and a
wide range of County Council and District Council
departments.
- The housing needs in our District are high and it has not been
possible to build the required number of affordable homes each year
to keep up with this need however we are committed to tackling this
issue and the provision of affordable housing is a top priority
within the District.
- In the 2010/11 financial year, 51 affordable homes were built
and so far this year at least 62 new homes have been built, with
more due in the second half of the year.
