Weekly Blossom Update!

4th May 2012

This bad weather has resulted in most of the Blossom disappearing over night.
Although there is a huge amount of Apple Blossom around - You must visit soon if you want a glimpse!!

16th April 2012

We are now seeing the results of the frost 10 days ago with blackened flowers and fruitlets. Fortunately there is still alot of blossom to be seen despite the frosts this last weekend. The dessert and culinary apples are at pink bud but the cooler weather that is forecast for this week will inevitably delay their opening until possibly this weekend or even next week.

The real stars have been the hedgerows where the sloes started flowering in late February and the damsons and hawthorn are still flowering! Most of the plum, cherry and pear flowers in the orchards are now being hidden by new leaves but there are still some big pear trees only just starting to flower e.g. opposite Pershore College. The cider apples have only just woken up and so will prolong the fruit tree blossom period into May, and more have been planted around the Vale of Evesham in recent years.

12th April 2012

The Blossom looks beautiful this week – In great time for our Blossom Trail Bikeaway this Sunday – 15th April!
Yesterday was our first Spring Time in the Vale Coach Tour for 2012, and it was great! The Blossom was in full bloom and the sun was even shining for the morning! Don’t forget about our next Spring Time in the Vale Coach Tour on the 18th and 25th of April.

If you want to come and see Worcestershire famous Blossom Trail – This weekend could be the right weekend to do so.

5th April 2012

The Plum Blossom is well and truly visible! The delightful white blossom, sits beautifully next to the soft pink tones of the apple blossom – come on the Blossom Trail and see it for yourself.

If the weather doesn’t get too windy, we should have a blossom filled Easter! Plum blossom can be seen on the slopes of the Lenches, Harvington, Stoulton, Drakes Broughton, Childswickham and Broadway. Happy Easter!

28th March 2012

All the action so far has been in the hedgerows whilst this week the wild cherry trees in the conservation plantings around the field margins are now flowering. We are also seeing white bud and some open flowers on the early varieties of orchard plums and, as this weather is set to continue, we could see full bloom this coming weekend with the later varieties flowering over the next two weeks. Orchard pears and cherries are waiting in the wings with the possibility that the pears will start to flower next week, the larger trees of perry pears scattered in fields are now showing open flowers. The route along the Blossom Trail particularly the Squires by Chadbury Farm Shop, Hipton Hill at Lenchwick and the Evesham By-pass should start look white this weekend.

In the hedges: The Cherry Plum is almost over, the Blackthorn (Sloe) is pretty good right now, the Hawthorn (May) is just starting to come.

In the orchard: The plum is just showing signs of breaking bud now - some trees are actually in flower, but the vast majority are still closed. Depending on the weather, I would estimate another week before the majority are flowering well.

21st March 2012

The only blossom is still the hedgerow plants of cherry plum and sloe which are lasting longer than last year due to there not being enough winter cold, unlike 2011 when plants flowered over a shorter period of time due to the cold weather before Christmas breaking bud dormancy. The flower buds of plums, pears and cherries are swelling at the moment and could be opening next week provided this warm weather continues. It looks as though it will be a protracted flowering season and should be hanging around for much longer than last year which is good news for tourists.

The Story of the Blossom........

The Vale of Evesham and its surrounding area is some of the most productive horticultural land in the country, and is well known for its apples, pears and plums. For the few short weeks between mid March and mid May, the road sides are ablaze with colour - the soft pink tones of cherry and apple blossom contrast with the white of the pear and plum. The Blossom Trail, now extended to include the Cotswold Village of Broadway, allows visitors to explore the natural beauty of the Vale at its best. So, this spring follow those famous AA signs along the 45 mile route, and journey through some of the most delightful villages this area has to offer. There are so many ways in which to enjoy this beautiful natural attraction. Not only can you travel by car, but for those of you who prefer ‘the great outdoors’

why not sample one of the Blossom Trail walks. These are a series of 3 walks designed with springtime blossom in mind, but they can be appreciated at anytime during the year. If cycling is more your style how about joining the Blossom Trail Bikeaway in aid of St.John Ambulance? This event is celebrating its 15th anniversary and will take place on the 10th April from a brand new venue, Rapheals Restaurant (Hampton Ferry), Boat Lane, Evesham. With a choice of 4 brand new routes on offer, there is certainly something for everyone. Or why not put your feet up and enjoy a fabulous day out on one of the Blossom Coach Tours (as recently featured on BBC TV’s ‘Countryfile’). Operated by Dudley’s Coaches Ltd on the 11th, 18th and 25th April, this value for money tour- with your very own Blossom Tour Guide allows you to experience the best of the Vale of Evesham. For further details or to book your seat, please call 01386 792206. If you are planning to take a group around the Trail, why not book a Tour Guide to enhance tour visit? Specialising in the area and more importantly its Blossom Trail, they will certainly make your journey around the Vale of Evesham one to remember. Call Helen Piper on 01386 765972 for more information regarding the Evesham Vale Tour Guides.

To celebrate its Silver Jubilee in 2008, the Blossom Trail was extended, and now the famous yellow AA signs will not only direct you through the delightful Vale of Evesham, it will also give you the opportunity to explore the Cotswold village of Broadway.
