Changing your browser settings

The BBC my web my way website explains the many ways you can change your browser, computer, keyboard and mouse settings to make the web more accessible for you. You may benefit from viewing this website with a larger text size or a different colour scheme than the one automatically displayed. The following guidelines will help you control the size of text and colours when using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browsers.

Controlling text and colours in Microsoft Internet Explorer

  • Click on 'Tools' from the top menu.
  • From the drop down menu, click on 'Internet options'.
  • Select the 'General' tab.
  • Click on 'Accessibility' (bottom right).
  • Change your font size by checking 'Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages'.
  • Remove background and font colours by checking 'Ignore colours specified on web pages'.
  • Click 'OK' to confirm the changes.
  • To specify your own text size, select 'View' from the top menu.
  • From the drop down menu select 'Text Size' and choose the size you like.

Controlling text and colours in Mozilla Firefox

  • Click on 'Tools' from the top menu.
  • From the drop down menu, click on 'Options'.
  • Select the 'Content' tab.
  • Under 'Fonts and Colours' Click on the 'Advanced...' option.
  • Change your font size by un-checking 'Allow pages to choose there own fonts...'.
  • To specify your own text options, choose the desired font and size from the options above.
  • Select 'OK' to save your options.
  • To Change the colours, select the 'Colours' tab under the 'Advanced...' option.
  • Then select the colours you would like for text, background and links, and then select 'OK'.

Controlling text and colours in Netscape Navigator

  • Select 'Edit' from the top menu and choose 'Preferences'.
  • Open the 'Appearance' group and click on 'Fonts'.
  • Next to 'For the encoding' should read Western From 'Size' select 18.
  • Next to 'Variable width font' is a drop down box: select 'Arial'. The 'Fixed width font' box should already read 'Courier New'. From 'Size' select 18.
  • To over-ride the default text size you see on our web pages, select 'Use my default fonts, overriding document specified fonts'.
  • Click 'OK'.

Colours

  • Select 'Edit' from the menu at the top of the window and choose 'Preferences'
  • Open the Appearance' group and click on 'Colours'
  • Select a colour button to change colours of text, background, unvisited links, or visited links
  • To override the default colours you see on our web pages, select 'Always use my colours, overriding document'
  • Click 'OK'
