Diamond Jubilee Community Recognition Awards

Background

  • The ‘Wychavon Bursary’ was originally started by Wychavon District Council in 1993 - to recognise the 40th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne and the service she has given to the nation since then.

  • In 2013 the original award was refreshed in accordance with The Queens Diamond Jubilee and all Parish and Town Councils had the opportunity to take part.  We have 29 contributors in the refreshed scheme.  The name was also changed from Wychavon Bursary to The Wychavon Diamond Jubilee Community Recognition Awards.

  • Each August the Chairman writes to the Town and Parish Council’s who contribute to the scheme inviting them to nominate one, or more people, who they think have made a real difference to the community.  The councillors who serve the relevant towns and parishes are also invited to make nominations though the town / parish council.

  • A judging panel meet to select a winner from the nominations submitted and a prize is awarded to an individual or group who has given exceptional service to others and the aim of the fund is to encourage them continue with the positive work.

  • A presentation evening is then held on or around the 5th February where all the nominees, participating parishes and towns and district councillors are invited to attend a special reception of thanks.

  • As well as a cheque for £200 the Winner of the first prize also receives a trophy which remains in their custody until the following year.

  • Runners up 2nd and 3rd place also receive awards of £100 and £50 respectively.

  • Each nominee receives a Certificate of Commendation.

The Chairman of Wychavon District Council, Cllr Mrs Val Wood, and the winner of the 2015/16 Diamond Jubilee Community Recognition Award, Mrs Viv Oddy.

The Diamond Jubilee Community Recognition Awards provide the perfect opportunity to recognise all of the unsung heroes in our district and celebrate a whole variety of expertise and skills, as well as generous acts of kindness and praise the voluntary time that is given.
