About the Malvern Hills and Wychavon Upskilling Project

The words UK Government with an official crest above the word UKWe have been given more than £283,000 from the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund to support a range of activities to boost skills, help businesses grow and support people into work.

You will find information on training and support schemes for businesses and individuals as part of this project on this page.

The UK Community Renewal Fund is a UK Government programme for 2021/22. This aims to support people and communities most in need across the UK to pilot programmes and new approaches to prepare for the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It invests in skills, community and place, local business, and supporting people into employment.

Malvern Hills District and Wychavon District Councils are running the scheme with Worcestershire County Council as the lead authority for the programme.

We carried out a business survey to understand the skills and training needs of local businesses.

Upskilling grant

Your business can receive up to £2,000 towards the cost of taking on an apprentice or trainee.

Businesses in any sector can apply and the money can be paid for all trainees, as long as they began training after 1 April 2021.

You can claim up to two upskilling grants.

To qualify your businesses just needs to:

  • be based in the Malvern Hills or Wychavon district postcode area
  • employ fewer than 250 people
  • pay at least the Minimum Wage to the trainee for a post of at least 20 hrs a week including training over a minimum of 3 months
  • provide for the trainee to gain a recognised qualification

Grants are paid on a first come first served basis and will last until the funding runs out so don’t miss out, apply now.

Grants are paid after the apprentice or trainee has completed 3 months of their course.

Don’t worry, applying doesn’t involve lots of paperwork but we will need you to provide the following information:

  • Confirmation from the training provider of the course and trainee’s enrolment.
  • Copy of a minimum 12 months signed employment contract
  • Signed Grant Agreement between employer and Malvern Hills District Council or Wychavon District Council
  • Any additional evidence requested by Malvern Hills District Council or Wychavon District Council

£500 training incentive payment

We believe apprenticeships and training are a great way to help you get started in the world of work.

If you start an apprenticeship or other training we will give you £500.

The incentive payment is open to anyone of any age.

To qualify for the payment you need to:

  • live in the Malvern Hills or Wychavon districts
  • be a new apprentice or trainee. You can be any age
  • earn less than £15,000 a year
  • complete the first three months of your apprenticeship/training
  • claim for the incentive support payment yourself

Training cost support payment

We believe apprenticeships and training are a great way to help you get started in the world of work or make a change in your career to another sector.

But we also know the cost of accessing training can make it difficult to take up.

We will pay up to £1,000 to help you cover the cost of travel, equipment, clothing and other suitable costs.

To qualify you must:

  • live in the Malvern Hills or Wychavon districts
  • be a new apprentice or trainee. You can be any age
  • earn less than £15,000 a year
  • claim for the training cost support payment yourself
