Current focus

In the Evesham area we have been working on priority one, tackling loneliness and social isolation, with a focus on preventing Type 2 Diabetes and early-onset dementia.

Wychavon has the lowest dementia diagnosis rate in the West Midlands, compared with England’s average.

This diagnosis rate compares the number of people estimated to have dementia, based on an average of prevalence and population, compared with the number of people officially diagnosed, aged 65 and over.

The aim is for at least two thirds of people with dementia to be diagnosed. It is important for people to receive a formal diagnosis so they can be advised and supported accordingly. The person living with dementia and their carer, will generally do better on their dementia journey than a person who has not received support or found their community within the local dementia support network.

 At the Evesham Place-based Working group, partners have been working to understand why our rates are so low. Our group consists of GPs, Primary Care Managers, Evesham Dementia Action Alliance, EDHMSS Meeting centre and Memory Café, Age UK, Onside Advocacy, Caring Hands and others.

We are working to promote the local dementia services available, because when there is familiarity and trust within local services, there is less fear.

We are working to show that life can continue with a dementia diagnosis. When receiving a diagnosis, individuals and their families will connect with these services and become more informed. With knowledge comes autonomy and individuals can plan what they wish their dementia journey to look like.

There is strong evidence that bringing people together in their local community helps most people build resilience in coping with dementia.
