Protect your bike from thieves at free event

Residents will have the chance to keep their bikes safe from thieves at a series of bike marking events across the Malvern Hills and Wychavon districts.

Malvern Hills and Wychavon District Councils are offering the free service in response to a rise in bike theft during the coronavirus outbreak.

Bike marking is a method that consists of applying a unique identifiable number to the frame of the bike, which is then registered with the National Bike Register Database.

This reduces the risk of a bike being stolen and if stolen, it makes it easier to report and find it again.

The events will follow social distancing guidelines at all times. Slots of 15 minutes will be available and booking is essential.

They will be held on the following dates:

  • Monday 22 June, 1pm-4pm: Outside the Council House on Avenue Road, Malvern.
  • Tuesday 23 June, 1pm-4pm: Civic Centre, café entrance by the water fountain, Pershore.
  • Wednesday 24 June, 1pm-4pm: Viaduct Meadow Car Park, Evesham.
  • Thursday 25 June, 1pm-4pm: Lido Car Park, Droitwich.
  • Friday 26 June, 11am-2pm: Great Witley Village Hall Car Park, Great Witley.

Cllr Tom Wells, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at Malvern Hills District Council, said: "With more people in the community taking up bike riding during lockdown, it is so important that they take the measures to protect their bikes from thieves. The sessions will be safe to attend and social distancing will be in place at all times."

Cllr Rob Adams, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement, Culture and Sport at Wychavon District Council, said: "These free bike marking events will give residents peace of mind that if their property is ever stolen or lost, there is a greater chance of being reunited."
