Council Tax Support formerly known as Council Tax Benefit, is a system which allows councils to give discounts on Council Tax bills to help people who have a low income. Unlike Housing Benefit payments, Council Tax Support normally cannot be backdated.

Am I eligible?

If you or your partner are working age and liable to pay Council Tax, you may be able entitled to receive a discount of up to 100% on your Council Tax bill.

Your benefit will be calculated based on the following:

  • your capital, including any savings
  • your income
  • the amount of Council Tax or rent you pay
  • your family circumstances

How to apply

We are going through an essential system upgrade from 1 to 31 July 2022. During this time we will be unable to process any new claims or change in circumstances to your Council Tax account or benefit claim.

Our online self-service facilities are also unavailable while this upgrade is carried out.

If you need to make a new claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support during July 2022 then you will need to fill in a paper form, which will need to be printed and emailed to us or returned to our offices.

If you do not have the ability to print your form then your local library may be able to help or you can email your full name and address to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with ‘new claim’ in the subject box and we will post one to you.
