Legal duty to dispose of business waste correctly
If you run a business, no matter what the size, then you are legally responsible for the waste you produce. You must make sure you do the following:
- Keep your waste to a minimum by doing everything you can to prevent, reuse, recycle or recover waste
- Store your waste safely and securely
- Arrange to have your waste taken away by us or another registered waste carrier
If you run a business from home you must have a separate waste collection, you cannot put business waste in your household bin.
You must pay for your business waste collection separately. It is not included as part of Business Rates.
If you do not dispose of your waste properly you could be prosecuted under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
