Application Criteria
1. Purpose of the Grant
The Active Travel Minor Grants programme supports small scale initiatives that encourage walking, wheeling, and cycling within local communities. Funding is intended for projects that promote behaviour change, build confidence, and create supportive environments for active travel.
Maximum award: £2,000
2. Purpose of the Fund
The fund aims to:
- Increase participation in active travel
- Support community led initiatives that make walking, wheeling, and cycling easier and more appealing
- Encourage behaviour change through events, education, and light touch infrastructure
- Enable organisations to trial new ideas or expand existing activities
This fund is not intended for major capital works or long term staffing.
3. Who Can Apply
The fund is open to:
- Schools
- Community groups and charities
- Residents’ associations
- Voluntary organisations
- Local businesses or workplaces (for staff focused initiatives)
Applicants must be able to manage the grant responsibly and deliver the project within the stated timeframe.
4. Eligible Activities
Applicants may apply for funding to support events, engagement activities, and minor infrastructure, including but not limited to:
- Community & School Events
- Bike buses / walking buses (equipment, signage, volunteer support materials)
- Led rides or walks, including route planning and safety briefings
- Car free day events, community ride outs, or “try a bike” sessions
- Cycle-to-school week activities or workplace active travel challenges
5. Education & Engagement
- Bikeability, balance bike sessions, or Dr Bike workshops
- Active travel awareness campaigns, posters, leaflets, or digital materials
- Workshops on route planning, bike maintenance, or guided walking
- Incentive schemes, such as stamp cards, reward tokens, or participation prizes
6. Minor Infrastructure (Low cost, non structural)
- Temporary or light touch improvements, such as signage, floor stencils, or wayfinding
- Storage solutions, e.g., Bike storage / parking, scooter pods, bike pumps, repair stands
- Safety equipment, such as hi vis vests for volunteers or event marshal
7. Application Requirements
Applicants must provide:
- A clear project description and intended outcomes
- A simple budget breakdown
- Evidence of community need or demand
- A short delivery plan (timeline, key activities, responsible individuals)
- A statement on how impact will be measured (e.g., participation numbers, feedback)
8. Assessment Criteria
Applications will be assessed on:
- Impact: Likelihood of increasing walking, wheeling, or cycling
- Inclusivity: Engagement of diverse or underrepresented groups
- Feasibility: Clear, realistic plan and budget
- Sustainability: Potential for lasting behaviour change
- Innovation: Creative approaches to encouraging active travel
