Edward Winslow was born in Droitwich on 18 October 1595, son of a prosperous salt manufacturer. He was educated King's School, Worcester. In 1617 he travelled to Leiden, Holland and became a prominent member of the local English puritan Church. In July 1620, Edward and his wife joined Leiden Puritans setting off on their epic voyage to Virginia in the Speedwell. In Plymouth they transferred to the Mayflower.
Winslow played a significant role in the early years of Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. In 1620, he was one of the signatories of what became known as the ‘Mayflower Compact’, a document seen by many as the birth of America’s democratic system of government.
In 1623 Edward sailed back to England, on the first of many occasions, to represent the interests of the new colony, and later held minor offices under Oliver Cromwell before dying of Yellow Fever at sea near Jamaica in 1655.
